Direct-to-Home (DTH) Satellite TV and the Ku-Band Era

While internet streaming is prevalent in 2026, Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite technology remains the most reliable method for delivering high-definition content to remote and rural areas. DTH bypasses local cable intermediaries, beaming signals directly from geostationary satellites to a small dish at the consumer's premises.

  • Digital Compression and Encryption: Modern DTH uses MPEG-4 or HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) to squeeze hundreds of channels into a limited spectrum. The signal is encrypted at the broadcast center; only a receiver with the correct "handshake" and security key (stored on a smart card or embedded chip) can decode the stream into a watchable image.

  • Signal Path: The broadcast center uplinks the signal in the Ku-band (10--14 GHz). Geostationary satellites, positioned $35,786 \text{ km}$ above the equator, receive this signal, amplify it, and beam it back to Earth in a "Footprint" that can cover entire continents.

  • The LNB (Low-Noise Block) Downconverter: The critical hardware on the consumer's dish is the LNB. It catches the high-frequency satellite signal, amplifies it while filtering out background cosmic noise, and "downconverts" it to a lower frequency that can travel through a standard coaxial cable to the set-top box.
