From Armory to World-Class Arena: The Story of Philadelphia’s Arlen Specter US Squash Center by Maddie Choi

The Arlen Specter US Squash Center serves as both the national headquarters and the main hub for U.S. squash activities, including training, events, and administration.  It stands as one of the most unique sports venues in the United States. It’s a place where history, architecture, and athletics collide.

A Building With a Past:

Long before the echo of squash balls filled its courts, the building served a very different purpose. Constructed in 1916 as the 32nd Street Armory, it was a hub for military activity and community events for decades.

Over time, the armory became a landmark, eventually earning a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Reinventing a Landmark:

Enter U.S. Squash and Drexel University. Their vision was to transform the armory into the largest and most accessible squash facility in the world.

After a major renovation beginning in 2019, the building reopened in 2021. The redesign preserved the building’s historic shell, blending old and new.

Inside the World’s Largest Squash Facility:

Today, the center houses around 20 courts, including 2 stunning glass show courts that host youth tournaments and elite international competitions.

The facility serves as:

  • The national headquarters for U.S. Squash

  • A training ground for elite athletes

  • A community hub introducing young people to the sport

  • Home to the U.S. Squash Hall of Fame

Whether you’re a professional athlete or someone picking up a racquet for the first time, the center is designed to welcome you.

Honoring a Philadelphia Legacy:

The center is named after Arlen Specter, who represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate for three decades. Known for his love for squash, and long-standing ties to Philadelphia, Specter’s name reflects the city’s deep civic pride and commitment to public service.

More Than a Sports Venue:

The venue is part of a broader movement to make squash, traditionally seen as an exclusive sport, more inclusive and accessible.

Programs hosted at the center focus heavily on youth engagement, education, and community outreach, ensuring that its impact goes far beyond competitive play.

A Symbol of Transformation:

In many ways, the Arlen Specter US Squash Center mirrors Philadelphia itself: historic yet evolving, rooted in tradition but always pushing forward. What was once a military armory is now a global hub for sport, community, and opportunity.

And that transformation is what makes it worth more than just a visit—it makes it worth telling its story.
