CONVERSATION WITH COACH JAHANZEB by Mia Ye, Neo Ye and Ally Jiang

Updated: May 12, 2025

Meet Coach Jahanzeb, owner of a premier squash club in Houston, Houston Squash Club (HSC).

How and when did your squash journey start?

I began playing at the age of 6, and although I participated in various sports, squash remained my passion, and I developed a strong affection for the racquet and ball. Given squash's popularity in my home country of Pakistan, my parents were familiar with the sport and introduced me to the court.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting squash?

Young individuals and their parents consider squash as a wonderful sport, providing an individualized environment where personal accomplishments are solely dependent on one's dedication. Having recently become an Olympic sport, squash is witnessing massive growth worldwide. By persisting with effort and enthusiasm, individuals can forge meaningful relationships through squash.

How is squash different from other racquetball sports? And why would you recommend it?

Squash stands out as the sole racquet sport played on the same side, boasting an exceptionally fast paced nature. Participating in squash can lead to a substantial caloric burn of 800-900 calories within a single hour, while also providing a rigorous whole-body workout. Additionally, squash is a mentally stimulating sport that demands swift strategic thinking. I highly recommend that everyone experience squash, as it presents an ideal opportunity to channel frustration into intense physical activity, hitting the ball with unbridled force.

Any advice you would like to share those who may feel discouraged and/or pressured at some point in their journey?

My advice to everyone is that squash requires endurance, not speed. It's crucial to maintain a strong work ethic and not get upset, as success will eventually follow. We all face pressures, but it's essential to remain composed and not give up easily. We must believe in ourselves and strive daily. With persistence, results will follow, and the journey will be fulfilling.

Your club has grown considerably and your students have done very well. Can you share your future vision and goals of Houston Squash Club?

Our vision for this club and community in Houston is to establish a vibrant hub that inspires growth, connection and excellence. By creating a warm and secure environment, we aim to make this space a beloved second home where athletes, parents, and families can build lifelong memories and friendships. You know I'm all about embracing challenges, which is why I opted for Houston in 2011 when I got an offer. I could have effortlessly landed a perfect job on the East Coast, but I thought, who would nurture squash talent in the South if everyone flocked to the East Coast? I'm driven to train less talented kids and bring out their best. Most coaches want to work with the elite athletes but exceptional coaches transform lower-level players into champions, and the pride that brings to players and parents is simply invaluable.

Our mission is to have HSC players going to the Olympics in the future.
